Frustrated by Google’s AI Overview when you just want a factual result?

Frustrated by Chrome giving you an “AI Overview” instead of a good match for your search?

Me too! I often want a source that I can cite in my research not what Gemini finds as a consensus answer. I’m not dissing AI, but there are sources I trust and ones I don’t. Because I don’t know how Google Gemini sorted its results, I’m skeptical.

If you use Google Chrome as your browser, here’s how to get rid of the Gemini AI Overview from your search results…

  1. In Chrome, go to the “3 dot menu” (top right) and choose Settings.
  2. Choose “Search Engine.
  3. 3Click the right pointing “>” beside “Manage search engines and site search.”
  4. Under “Site search” click “Add” to install a new Search engine option. A new window will open.
    1. Call the new Search Site anything you would like, “Like Google without AI Overview”.
    2. Give it a shortcut of google.com (Note that on one instance, it wouldn’t accept this and I had to use “google.com/“)
    3. Fill in the URL with this exact string: {google:baseURL}/search?udm=14&q=%s
The completed window is in the picture below.
  5. Click “Add” and you should be back in the main “Search Engine” window again.
  6. Click the 3-dots beside your new Search Site entry and make it the default. It will be moved to the upper section named “Search engines” and be listed in bold font as the default.

You can always go back to the default Google search engine from this list if you want.
